It is documented that some CBC analyzers in the market have problems with reporting MPV parameter in the presence of interferences or with the patients that have low platelet counts1.


Beckman Coulter DxH 900 & DxH 690T analyzers are utilizing several patented features to overcome interferences on platelet counting and to increase the number of platelet events on the low platelet counts like like ‘log fitted curve’, extended platelet counting and DataFusion.2 As an outcome, MPV parameter is reportable in all patient results, without a need of an extra reagent and without reflexing to an extra test3 On DxH 900 & DxH 690T hematology analyzers, it is possible to obtain MPV results even in the presence of very small RBCs (Figure 1) or low platelet counts (Figure 2)


How are the clinicians using MPV parameter?


There are several usages of MPV parameter, the documented topics are:
  • Differential diagnosis of thrombocytopenia, discriminating low platelet production from increased platelet destruction4 5 6 7 8 9
  • MPV is well established predictor of thromboembolic risk in various diseases such as myocardial infarction, stroke and venous thromboembolism 10 11 12 13 14 15
  • MPV is predictor of upcoming platelet count recovery in patients with severe thrombocytopenia, thus avoiding platelet transfusions16 17 18 19 20
